Statement in the House by: MGR Oriani – Ambrosini MP (IFP)
The Chamtrul Rinpoche Buddist Group hereby thanks the attorney’s firm of John Smith & Associates of Cape Town for their representation of the Buddists’ interests in the High Court application and in the subsesquent appeal in which the Supreme Court of Appeal recently held that the Minister of Home Affairs had unreasonably delayed her decision whether to grant or withhold the visa application by His Holiness, the Dalai Lama to visit the Republic of South Africa during the 2011 and in so doing, had acted unlawfully.
Below is the statement in the House by: MGR Oriani – Ambrosini MP (IFP) – 23 October 2012
“The recent judgement of the Constitutional Court declaring some of the Rules of this House unconstitutional left no winners nor losers. but was a triumph for our democracy and for all of us in the House. It has opened the door towards a new, higher, more intense and all-around better stage of our parliamentary democracy. The doors are now open for a new and braver Parliament in which legislators actually legislate by applying their minds to both general and constituency concerns which they seek to address by means of their own bills. At the dawn of this new horizon, together – both in the ranks of the opposition as well as in the ruling party – we hope to take advantage of this opportunity in a manner which is constructive and beneficial to the strengthening of our democracy. I would be remiss if I were not to take this opportunity to publicly thank the lawyers who helped our Republic to achieve this democratic milestone. I wish to place on the permanent record on this House our collegial recognition and thanks to Advocate David Unterholter, Max Du Plessis, Sarah Pudifin, Anton Katz and Michael Osborne and I offer a special word of thank to he who acted both as our attorney and as a source of constant guidance and moral support, Attorney John Smith.”
